Tower Insurance Team Help Beach Buddies

Beach Buddies - April 2025

A team from Tower spent a day in glorious weather in the south of the Island working with local charity Beach Buddies.

Starting on Castletown Beach, armed with bags and gloves, the team worked for the morning, covering about a mile of beach. By the end of the morning a full industial wheely bin was filled, with items ranging from small pieces of plastic to a large length of fishing rope.

After lunch the team moved round to Derbyhaven beach and filled a further three large bins.

Tired and tanned, the team reflected on a hard day picking. "I can understand why bottle tops are now attached to the bottles, I have never seen so many discarded bottle tops" commented Brett Hammonds.

Strangest find, footwear! A wellie, trainer and a sandal, so if you are short of one they are in the large bin at Derbyhaven beach.

Kellie Hands, chair of the Tower Charity Committee " Beach Buddies is a charity that is close to many peoples hearts. Living on such a beautiful Island, we all want to ensure it looks its best and look after what we have got, so to be able to help out is an honour"

Beach Buddies was the idea of a local photographer Bill Dale and was founded in 2006 after a dog walk on a local beach, they were shocked at the amount of waste material being washed up on the beaches and wanted to do something about it.

Since then 1,000's of volunteer hours have been given up, even stars like TT Ace Guy Martin has been involed.
